Alor-Agu Community Rises in Protest, Demanding Free and Fair Igweship Election

…"A plea for unbiased Igweship Election", Alor-Agu people; Elders, Youths, Leader of Igbo-Eze South legislative council, PDP Executives and Labour Party executives cry out, summons their deity, Nwada-Adoro to ensure a transparent Igweship election.


In a remarkable display of unity and determination, Tuesday, October 10, 2023, the people of Alor-Agu community in Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area of Enugu state took to the streets today, vehemently demanding a free and fair Igweship election, while sending a resounding message to Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah pleading to uphold their democratic rights.


The atmosphere earlier today in Alor-Agu Community was charged as elderly men and women, along with spirited youths, poured into the streets, carrying placards with powerful messages. These messages included: "Governor Peter Mbah, please conduct free and fair election of Igwe for the people of Alor-Agu Community," and "Say no to partisan politics in Igweship election in Alor-Agu." These slogans reflected their determination for an unbiased electoral process.


The people of Alor-Agu, a peaceful community, were resolute in their quest for justice and transparent Igweship election.. They declared, "Alor-Agu is for peace; give us free and fair Igweship election," emphasizing their commitment to a harmonious transition of power for the traditional stool.


The resounding chant of "Governor Peter Mbah, please conduct a free and fair Igweship election for the people of Alor-Agu community" echoed through the streets, leaving no room for doubt about their demands.


The protesters emphasized that Igweship elections in Alor-Agu should remain apolitical, stating, "Igweship election in Alor-Agu has nothing to do with any political party." This call highlights their insistence on keeping political interference at bay to ensure a truly democratic process.


In a symbolic gesture, the community also summoned one of their revered deities, Nwada-Adoro, to protect the sanctity of their democratic rights. Meanwhile, recall that they had on 20th May, 2023 called on the same deity to oversee the May 21st which later was truncated by one of the Igweship candidates and his members in the community.


The protest was a cross-generational movement, with elderly men and women of the community, alongside passionate youths and other residents, coming together to make their voices heard. They buttressed that their unity now lies on a transparent Igweship election for the continued peace and progress of Alor-Agu.


In the event, different elders of the community expressed their concerns with the development, calling for a free and fair igweship election in the community, such elders who made the call while addressing press include, Mr. Joseph Ugwuanyi, Mr. John Eze, Mrs Rabi Onah, Mrs Josephine Omeke and others.


The speaker of Igbo-Eze South LGA and councillor of Alor-Agu ward, Hon. Ugochukwu Ezugwu cried out reiterating that Alor-Agu Community has been without Igwe for the past five years and pleaded with Governor Mbah and Deacon Okey Og­bodo, Commissioner for Local Government, Rural Development and Chieftaincy Affairs to conduct a free and fair igweship election in the community so the community can join her counterparts in fully benefiting from the government. The People's Democratic Party (PDP) ward Chairman of the ward, Alhaji Salisu Ayogu (Dede Ayogu) while addressing the press, reminded the government that if a candidate is imposed on the community that it will drastically affect the community and the party. And on the issue of the Igweship tussle being partisan, he noted that the Igweship campaign started in 2019 when Labour Party was not even on the radar, warning that the Alor-Agu ward is PDP and any imposition of Igwe on the people of Alor-Agu will invariably affect the party's might in the community. Also, the PDP woman leader of Alor-Agu ward, Mrs Angela Ameh also called for a transparent Igweship election, buttressing that Igweship election is apolitical as the "Labour Party Vs PDP" tussle only started in 2023 general elections and that it is only a free and fair igweship election that can strengthen the PDP in the community.


Remarkably, the Labour Party chairman of Alor-Agu ward, Anselm Onah called on the Governor to allow the Igweship election to be determined based on popular demand and that the capacity, character and personality of the candidates should be the focal points and not based on party politics, highlighting that the 2023 general election campaign is over.


As the sun set on this historic day of protest, the people of Alor-Agu remain resolute in their demand for a free and fair Igweship election. Their message was clear: they would not accept any imposition and would continue to fight for their right to choose their Igwe through a democratic process. Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah and Deacon Okey Og­bodo, Commissioner for Local Government, Rural Development and Chieftaincy Affairs now face the responsibility of addressing their calls for justice and transparency in the forthcoming Igweship election.
