 Red Chamber: Ikeje As the Man the Cap Fits

Ikeje Asogwa (Ide N' Iheaka), a former Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Enugu State, former MD of the Housing Corporation, and Chairman of the Enugu State Universal Basic Education Board, ENSUBEB, has been a visible figure in Enugu politics for years. As he aspires to go to the Red Chamber to represent the great people of Enugu North, here are factors that will work in his favour.


1. Strong Grassroots Network


-Party structure experience: As a former PDP State Chairman, he understands party mechanics, delegate mobilization, and grassroots canvassing. That is crucial for primaries and general elections in Nigeria. With this, Ide triumphs without blinking.


Local ties: He hails from Enugu North and has maintained relationships with traditional rulers, youth groups, and market associations. That base gives him a ready-made political structure.


2. Administrative Track Record


Executive experience: His service in different executive positions in the state has given him an edge over many. It provides him insight into governance, budget implementation, and inter-governmental relations.


- Policy familiarity: His time in government means he can speak to issues like rural development, youth inclusion in governance, job creation, and civil service reform with firsthand knowledge.


3. Coalition Building Ability.


- Cross-zonal appeal: During his tenure as party chairman, he managed a state with three senatorial zones. Balancing the interests of Enugu East, West, and North is a skill needed for statewide or national contests.


- Conflict management: Nigerian politics requires managing diverse interests. His background in party administration exposed him to consensus-building and crisis resolution, thereby ensuring unity among various ethnic groups.


4. Equity and Inclusion.

Nsukka zone has historically demanded more federal and state presence. Championing fairness in appointments and projects resonates locally. Ikeje, as a man of the people, will be driven by public interest, showcasing reforms and new ideas and speaking truth to power, especially on issues bedeviling Enugu North as a whole.


Ikeje Asogwa has the structure, experience, and name recognition to do well in Nigerian politics, especially in Enugu North. It is said that he who receives the blessings of the gods becomes the expected Ijele Masquerade. Now that the Ijele Masquerade is out, other masquerades scamper.

HEALTH  03 JUNE, 2024 ENUGU GOVT APPROVES RECRUITMENT OF 400 STAFF IN PHCS  The Enugu State Government says it will be employing no fewer than 400 clinical and non clinical staff within its functional Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) to strengthen manpower needs. Dr Ifeyinwa Ani-Osheku, the Executive Secretary of Enugu State Primary Health Care Development Agency (ENS-PHCDA), disclosed this to newsmen yesterday in Enugu. Ani-Osheku noted that those to be employed are based on existing man-power gaps identified in PHCs in each of the 17 council areas. She said that the agency and the health ministry had already collated data on the PHC centre equipment and manpower gaps in the 17 council areas in the state.
