The deep sense of loss felt in Nsukka following the demolition of sections of Ogige Market: occasioned by the inability of our Nsukka trustees to appropriately manage the affairs of the marketers relocation program, will soon become a thing of the past. Today, under the leadership of Engr. Jude Asogwa, at the local government level, and His Excellency Barr. Dr. Peter Ndubisi Mbah at the state level, there is a clear, deliberate effort not only to right the wrongs but to ensure that justice is done and seen to have been holistically achieved.


The Nsukka International Market, an initiative of Engr. Jude Chinedu Asogwa, KSJI, Chairman of Nsukka Local Government Area, and strongly supported by the Enugu State Government, stands as a bold response to that painful chapter. Officially approved and ceremonially flagged off by the Governor, this project is designed not only to reposition Nsukka LGA but to elevate the entire zone onto the global commercial stage. It also serves as a well-thought-out measure of restitution for traders who lost their shops during the Ogige Market demolition saga, restoring hope and rebuilding livelihoods.


This project further underscores the Governor’s genuine commitment and love for the people of Nsukka. Beyond granting approval, His Excellency has demonstrated tangible support through the release of ₦500 million towards the development of this mega market, alongside other developmental strides across the zone. One cannot help but observe that while similar demolitions occurred in places like Abakpa and Old Park in Enugu, it is in Nsukka that the government has most swiftly and decisively moved to construct a modern replacement: highlighting a unique responsiveness to the needs of the people.


Currently progressing at an impressive pace, the Nsukka International Market is visibly taking shape. Numerous shop structures have advanced from foundation stages to lintel levels, with several already approaching decking stages. Work is actively ongoing across different sections, including the mapping and clearing of the designated park area, as well as the construction of drainage systems along the access roads. The vision of a 10,000-capacity market is steadily materializing, with more structures emerging daily, reflecting both planning efficiency and execution commitment.


Looking ahead, the economic and developmental prospects of the market are both vast and strategic. Designed with an ergonomic layout, the market is positioned to integrate and enhance the operations of surrounding smaller markets, serving as a hub that channels local produce outward while attracting global goods and services inward. HEALTH  03 JUNE, 2024 ENUGU GOVT APPROVES RECRUITMENT OF 400 STAFF IN PHCS  The Enugu State Government says it will be employing no fewer than 400 clinical and non clinical staff within its functional Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) to strengthen manpower needs. Dr Ifeyinwa Ani-Osheku, the Executive Secretary of Enugu State Primary Health Care Development Agency (ENS-PHCDA), disclosed this to newsmen yesterday in Enugu. Ani-Osheku noted that those to be employed are based on existing man-power gaps identified in PHCs in each of the 17 council areas. She said that the agency and the health ministry had already collated data on the PHC centre equipment and manpower gaps in the 17 council areas in the state.
